Energy efficient Shanghai tower in China

The Shanghai Tower is not only the tallest building in China but the second tallest in the world after the prestigious Burj Khalifa in Dubai.The Shanghai Tower incorporates numerous green architecture elements; its owners received certifications from the China Green Building Committee and the U.S. Green Building Council for the building’s sustainable design. . It also achieved the LEED platinum rating for sustainable buildings. LEED is an internationally recognized benchmark for sustainability. The building is said to have up 43 sustainable technologies which makes it one of the greenest buildings of all time.

.The Shanghai Tower was designed by the American architectural firm Gensler, with Shanghainese architect Jun Xia leading the design team. The tower takes the form of nine cylindrical buildings stacked atop each other, it’s height is 632m and it totals 128 floors, all enclosed by the inner layer of the transparent glass facade. While Dubai’s Burj Khalifa holds the world record for tallest building, Shanghai Tower is actually the tallest by height to usable floor. The top floor of the Burj is at 584.5 meters (1917.7 feet), and the top floor of the Shanghai Tower squeaks past it, coming in at 587.4 meters (1927.2). The tower had an estimated construction cost of US$2.4 billion

It is in the form of a vertical city. The cylindrical firm looks like nine cities with a green park stacked atop each other. Each cylindrical stark consists of nine floors and comes with an atrium. Each stark has a sky garden displaying plants and greenery found in China. On top of it, the landscape architectural firm, SWA Group confirms that The Shanghai tower will also have a garden planted in primary soil mixed with extra nutrients and compost, irrigated by a drip system in each of the nine “sky lobbies” to showcase varieties of plants from China. Each “Sky Garden” will also act as a “buffer zone” into which indoor air will spill before being exhausted from the buildings, helping to cool it; which means you can just take a walk in the building when you feel like walking in a park and clearing your head, or want to just feel closer to nature.

The building twists 120° as it ascends, cutting the wind load and hereby making the building lighter. The building is designed to capture rainwater for internal use.

It has over 200 wind turbines at the top of the building that generates on site power used to light outside the building and park areas. These turbines cut down 10% of power generating cost for the tower.

The transparent façade is a unique design feature, because most buildings have only a single façade using highly reflective glass to reduce heat absorption, but the Shanghai Tower’s double layer of glass eliminates the need for either layer to be opaqued. It minimizes heat gain while maximizing daylight.

The tower is able to accommodate as many as 16,000 people on a daily basis. The tower will also incorporate a museum. It’s tower’s sub-levels provide parking spaces for 1,800 vehicles. It uses 30% less energy than a building of comparable size.
