Hotel Requirements

A hotel as we know is an establishment providing accommodation for tourists and travelers. Hotels are rated in stars as proposed by WORLD TOURISM ORGANISATION. These stars range from one to five; so in other news, some hotels are rated as one-star, 2-star …5-star hotels.
Things to consider during hotel design
ORIENTATION: First and foremost, put into consideration the orientation of your hotel building in site. Think about your spaces and the relationship between spaces; and then think about the position of your site. Know the areas prone to noise and the areas not prone to noise. Consider the functions of your spaces and then align them accordingly.
CIRCULATION: Circulation well planned creates easy flow of traffic in a hotel. By design, the architect should provide for separation of guests, staff and maintenance personnel. There should be separate access to the restaurants and banquet hall to reduce traffic at the reception. There should also be direct access from the reception to the guest places like bedroom, lounges, restaurants, event halls, etc.

NOISE: Noise is a generally disturbing. It could either come from the inside or from the outside. Sources of noise from outside include from the highway, car pack, within the building such as play areas, outdoor reception grounds, pool area, etc. it could be generated from inside the hotel. From the kitchen, restaurant, dancehall, disco hall, event hall, lifts etc. designers should be absolutely Careful In planning of spaces so as to demarcate the noisy areas from the less noisy areas. Rooms should be kept so far away from the kitchen as possible. Also worthy to note, elevators shouldn’t be located right next to bedrooms. There also should be reduction of reverberation in the building; this would help reduce noise level.
LIGHTING: lighting helps define a space; also in highlighting a space and finally differentiating between spaces. Lighting could change according to time of the day. Spotlights, colored, fluorescents, etc should all be used properly.
SAFETY: the safety in a hotel room is very vital. The hotel environment has to be harm free. Materials for furnishes should be of no absolute harm. Every mechanical equipment e.g. lifts and escalators; used in the hotel must be considered safe for occupants. The windows and doors and every other thing occupants come in contact with throughout their stay in the hotel must be 100% safe, during construction, care should be taken to make sure there is no construction fail that might cause hazard in the future.

FIRE PROTECTION ENGINEERING: this is covered under fire protection engineering. The architect and every other professional (architect, structural, mechanical, electrical, chemical and process engineers, interior designers, etc) on site must make sure they work with the fire protection engineer during design of every stage in this hotel. There must be fixed equipment for detection of fire, raising alarm and also putting off this fire. Also there should be made available proper escape routes for easy escape from building during outbreak. Also provision should be made during design for fire brigade’s vehicle and equipment; also a separate lift should be provided for fire men to access all storeys with ease.
PIPED SERVICES: a duct system is a major in any hotel design. Poor ducting system can lead to leakages and spillages in a hotel and that can be bad for guests, staff and management. The pipes should be kept long on size but short in length without access to bedrooms. Proper drainage system must be built to carry waste water from the hotel away including water from bedrooms, kitchen, swimming pool, fire fight, etc.

COMMUNICATION: every bedroom must contain a telephone. Payphones should be located in public areas and staff rest rooms. Internal location should be located in plant rooms, kitchen, serveries and bars, escape routes, etc also a direct line should be required for fax machine. There should also be public address systems for paging guests and also for dance halls, conference and event centre.
GOOD SANITAION: designer must be careful not to use materials that are easily contaminated and also difficult to clean. Provision should be made for proper disposal of wastes in the hotel environment. Also taken seriously is the drainage system. There should be no room for insects and rodents in this hotel surrounding.

EMERGENCY ESCAPE: escape routes should not be far from bedrooms. Should not be hidden from occupants either. There should be proper signs preferably written in red to lead people to emergency exits. Escape routes must be large enough to contain as many occupants as possible. Finally, exit doors must lead directly outside and not into another room in the building.
LIFTS: the main lift should be located close to the entrance right at the reception. It should be wide enough to accommodate many guests at a time. The lift should be close to the stair hall. Additional lifts for services and room keeping should be provided. Guests lift should be different from that of occupants. The proportion is thus- one or two service lifts to three guest lifts- and the service lifts open to service lobbies on each floor.
STAIRS: as stated above, the main stair hall should be close to the lift bank. Secondary stair halls should be located at the end or middle of every corridor, depending on design.

SECURITY: there should be proper surveillance made available. CCTV cameras should be mounted in strategic places. Security doors and windows should be used where necessary. There must be strong rooms built to protect valuables of guests and staff. Entrance must not go beyond entrance desk.
ENVIRONMENT: environment must be mostly cozy and full of sweet ambience. Every space must radiate this warm and endearing aura.
